Meta, the business conglomerate that owns brands such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, announced that it will restrict access to Russian media RussiaToday and Sputnik to the countries of the European Union, as confirmed by Nick Cregg, the company’s vice president, through his official Twitter account.
The list of countries that will be affected by the restrictions includes 27 European states, where access to the Instagram accounts of both media outlets has already been blocked.

“We have received requests from various governments and the EU for us to take further action in relation to the Russian state-controlled media. Given the exceptional nature of the current situation, at this time, we will be restricting access to RT and Sputnik across the EU,” Cregg said.
In recent days, the blocking of various Russian media outlets in the countries of the European Union is one of the sanctions in connection with the military operation that Russia has been carrying out on Ukrainian territory, mentioned the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

This is not the first time that the Russian press has had difficulties in Western countries. In November 2016, the European Parliament had a resolution to counter Russian media, identifying Sputnik and RT as the main threats.
