Windows 7, Microsoft’s operating system launched in 2009, is still used by millions of people around the world. Already with 13 years behind it, this OS has not been able to be completely ignored in Redmond, from where they continue to be released updates, although with an expensive payment barrier. Even so, thousands of people have managed to bypass this requirement and have been able to update their computers without any problem.
As pointed out by the Techspot portal, the latest Patch Tuesday (popular term to refer to the days when Microsoft patches are released) has been surprised by the presence of Windows 7, which has received its latest security updates.

Windows 7 updates continue, but they’re not free
It is worth noting that, even if Microsoft continues to work on patches for this system, you don’t do it for free. Official security support for Windows 7 ended in 2020, but the millions of users still using it can upgrade by paying for one of the expensive plans available.
The first one costs no less than 100 dollars and is only good for those who use the enterprise version of the. The second is even more expensive ($200), and is required if you use the pro version. Both are the only options of the so-called Extended Security Updates (ESU).
As you can see, the only market where Microsoft continues to support Windows 7 is business (although many users choose to use the Pro version). Putting such a high payment barrier on upgrades – which are free on Windows 10 and Windows 11 – could make many reconsider moving to these more modern OSs; still, the millions of W7 supporters have found a way around the bill.

Windows 7 users refuse to pay
In 2019, some My Digital Life forum users managed to create a way to bypass the ESU check and still update Windows 7 for free. According to reports, the same method continues to work to this day, and is the reason why many have been able to patch their systems to the latest version, released this Tuesday, April 12.
What’s new in Windows 7?
updates KB5012626 Y KB5012649 for Windows 7 include security improvements and bug fixes for Windows Media Center. According to Microsoft, the system will continue to receive patches through ESU until January 2023. Will this OS survive for more years? Time will tell.
