According to researchers specializing in cybersecurity at Threat Fabric, the applications infected by the malware exceeded 50,000 installations, and had been distributed through the Play Store. The Trojan would have even been able to evade Google Play Protect’s threat detection systems.

octo is part of the ExoBot family, a type of malware which has been evolving since it was developed in 2016. With its integration into the hook apps, the malware opens a VNC session with the attack panel to stream the screen, while using the tools of accessibility to capture and simulate touches on the panel.
In this way, the Trojan is capable of carrying out fraud attacks on the device through the ODF functionality, one of the most dangerous and discreet types of threats that exist to steal bank data, since it keeps the mobile phone unlocked at all times without make the user aware.
Among the applications that are infected by Octo is Fast Cleaner, a widely used app to clean the cache of Android phones. However, it is not the only one on the list, there are also the following apps:
